Rock climbing is an extreme sport of climbing steep and high rock surfaces. It is an extremely mentally and physically straining activity. Rock climbing is not new in Nepal but it has recently gained popularity in Kathmandu thanks to the natural and majestic rock faces within the valley. The numerous natural climbing sites in Kathmandu are suitable for all kinds of climbers ranging from beginners to experts. The climbing spots in Nepal are mostly in the North of Kathmandu valley, nearby Pokhara and Everest region naming few are Balaju (Nagarjun), Hattiban, Chhomrong, Thame (Everest region) and Bimal Nagar. The trip to these places can be combined with bird watching, hiking, nature tours, and other adventure sports. Here is a list of Rock climbing destinations in  Nepal.

Balaju:

This spot is located just 3 km North West of Kathmandu valley. The nearest climbing site which is just 20 mins drive from the main tourist hub Thamel is the best place for all kinds of climbers from beginners to the professionals. There are more than 21 climbing routes and from grade 4a to 7a+ overhang climbing; for the self-learners, there are many multi-pitch 30m and single pitch 12m. However, tourists are currently not allowed to enter this site without a Nepali guide. It is one of the nearest Climbing Site in Capital.

Hattiban:

This site is situated 26 km south west of Kathmandu valley and it takes 1 hour by bus to reach there. The climbing grades go from 6a to 7a.  Having more than 8 routes, one can enjoy the top level grade of climbing. It is just 20-minute walk from the Road there are more than 10 routes. The climbing grades are starting from 6a to 7a. This place is very good in winter because it is south faced and the sunlight is available all day.

Nagarjun:

A 30-minute drive from Thamel will take you to Nagarjun Forest Reserve, located 3km northwest of Kathmandu Valley. While an excellent site for beginners, novices, and professional climbers, bird watchers will love it as well for the over 318 species of birds recorded by ornithologists. Nagarjun Forest is a great area for both hiking and climbing. The cliffs here range from about 15m to 25m tall and have about 20 routes of varying difficulty. Most of these routes are bolted for sport climbing, and it is possible to set up top-ropes.

Thame Rock Climbing:

It is situated in the eastern part of Nepal, nearby Mt. Everest at the height of 3800m in Thame. This village is very famous among the climbers because both of world record holder Everest climbers are born in this village. In this rock climbing site, there are more than 17 different routes which are starting from 4c to 7c multi-pitch 200m height. You can also observe the most popular Everest region while climbing in this site. It is definitely one of the best rock climbing destinations in Nepal.

Bimal Nagar Rock Climbing:

This newly opened site is located in the south west of Kathmandu valley on the way to Pokhara, 140 km away from Kathmandu. It is about 60 m natural rock climbing with only a few fixed routes, with 4 multi-pitch and some single pitches. Along with the climbing experience, it also offers its visitors with magnificent views of Mt. Manaslu and the Marshyandi River.
