He is an artist whose mission is to bring his unique vision to the forefront of the industry and lease an indelible mark on the work of fashion. He owns his self-titled fashion clothing brand. Early Life & Education
Prabal Gurung was born on March 31, 1972, in Singapore and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal. He studied at St. Xavier’s School which was one of the most reputed Jesuit Catholic schools and finished his schooling from there. His mother Durga Rana was the former Boutique owner. His older brother Pravesh Rana Gurung is an Indian Film director and his older sister Kumudini Shrestha is a Teacher and Social worker. Before entering the fashion world, he earned his bachelor degree in hotel management from the National Council of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition.
Prabal Gurung has always been interested in clothing and colors. He was introduced to the World of fashion when he moved to one of the biggest cities in New Delhi, India. There he attended the National Institute of Fashion Technology. Eventually, he received an opportunity to assist stylists in London and Melbourne during fashion shows for international print media. This opened up more doors for Prabal to expand beyond Asia and make his mark around the world. In 1999 Gurung moved from New Delhi to New York City where he attended Parsons School of Design and studied under an internship with Donna Karan. Gurung spent two years with Cynthia Rowley’s design and production teams. Soon after, he was appointed design director at the iconic Bill Blass, a post he held for five years until launching his own collection. His own collection PRABAL GURUNG was released during Fashion Week in February 2009 with the FLAG Art Collection.
His designs have been seen on famous personalities including Demi Moore, Anne Hathaway, Kerry Washington, Jennifer Lawrence, Zoe Saldana, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Hudson, Scarlett Johanson, January Jones, Amanda Seyfried, Emma Watson, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Catherine (The Duchess of Cambridge), Lady Gaga, Elettra Wiedemann, and Marion Cotillard. In addition to this, his works have been worn by Bollywood actresses such as Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone as well as Katrina Kaif.
In 2010 he was the recipient of the Ecco Domani Fashion Fund Award and received a nomination for the 2010 CFDA/Swarovski Womenswear Award. He was also chosen by prominent fashion editors, retailers, designers, and business people for the CFDA Fashion Incubator for 2010-2012. In November 2010, Gurung was runner-up for the 2010 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund.
