Early Life, Education

Tim Ferriss was born prematurely on July 20, 1977, grew up in East Hampton, New York. He was from a middle-class family. Although his parents didn’t have much money, they would always buy books for him, and it’s how he developed a love for learning. When he was around eight years old, his mom signed him up for wrestling classes, a sport that laid the foundation for his love with workouts and diets that he would develop as a teenager. He graduated from St. Paul’s School, Concord, New Hampshire. At age 15, he spent a year as an exchange student in Japan. He graduated with an A.B. in East Asian studies from Princeton University in 2000 after completing a 128-page-long senior thesis, titled “Acquisition of Japanese Kanji”.

Depression

He got to an especially dark point during his senior year of college. He’s since come to see it as one of several turning points in his life. Ferriss said that he was in a “very, very dark” time as a college senior and even contemplated suicide. He has dealt with bipolar depression. But he surpassed the depression and started his own company, BrainQuicken.

Career

Ferriss founded BrainQUICKEN in 2001, an internet-based nutritional supplements business. But in 2004, after his friend died his business hit a dead end. Then in 2007, after a very hardworking Ferriss finally landed a small book a career-defining book, “The 4-Hour Workweek” deal after countless rejections, but neither he nor his publisher expected it to do much. The book blew up, and soon Ferriss was regularly appearing in the media and on stage.
